Description
The contextually difficult task of preaching about racism requires intentionality. This seminar study about race and preaching invites reflective practitioners and students in initial and advanced ministerial formation to peer learning about racism in America and antiracism preaching practices.
Objectives
- Learning and applying the vocabulary of caste and trauma to understand racism in personal, congregational, ecclesial, and social contexts
- Bearing witness to experiences of racial suffering
- Exploring pastoral, prophetic, and theological strategies for constructive antiracism preaching
- Praying to heal and repair the social fabric of a world torn by racism (Though there will be brief preaching during class prayer, this is not a preaching lab course.)

- Reading begins May 17, 2021
- Required Zoom classes on four Fridays from 9:30 am-noon and 1-3 pm central.

Requirements
- Prerequisite: At least one previous preaching course
- Friday Zoom classes: 2½ hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon on the four Fridays of June.
- Reading: 1,001 pages core reading for all students and 568 additional pages for DMin students.
- One-on-one Zoom consultation with an instructor: Every student in June, plus a second consultation with DMin students in July.
- Integrative paper: Master’s and DMin students only, due at the end of July.
- Auditing Students: Core reading, class exercises, and one-on-one Zoom in June.

When you register, you will be required to pay a $150 deposit to reserve your spot. This deposit will be applied to your tuition and will be reflected on the billing statement (invoice) you will receive from the Student Billing office. Please note, you should not expect to receive an invoice until at least April 12th, and payment will be due in full no later than May 17th.

Unfortunately, no. At least one preaching course is required for all students in this course. This is because the course has been designed specifically for individuals who have some knowledge of homiletics and preaching and will not cover any foundational preaching concepts.
